Tennis is a sport contested at the Summer Olympic Games. Men's singles and doubles tournaments were first held at the inaugural Olympic Games in 1896. The first women's events were staged in 1900. From 1928, tennis was left out of the Olympic program, only being played as a demonstration event in 1968 and 1984. It was not reinstated as a medal sport until the 1988.
Kathleen McKane Godfree is the all-time record holder for the most Olympic medals in tennis, with three golds and one bronze. Four players have earned four medals: Reginald Doherty (who sits on top of the overall medal table with three golds and 1 bronze A), Charles Dixon (one gold, one silver, two bronze), Arantxa Sanchez Vicario and Gunnar Setterwall (both two silver, two bronze). Eight Americans have earned two or more gold medals - Venus Williams, Vincent Richards, Mary Joe Fernandez, Gigi Fernandez, Hazel Hotchkiss Wightman, Serena Williams, Helen Wills Moody and Beals Wright - while a further ten athletes from other countries have achieved the feat. Fifteen players, including V. Williams, Richards and M.J. Fernandez, have won a total of three medals.
