Established in 1980 by co-founders Saul Kent and William Faloon, the Life Extension Foundation (LEF) is a non-profit research-based organization headquartered in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.[1][2][3] Its primary purpose is to fund research and disseminate information on life extension, preventive medicine, "anti-aging" and optimal health. Compared to other organizations in the life extension movement, it is strongly focused on hormonal and nutritional supplementation, and much of its income is derived from the sale of vitamins and supplements. However, it does fund basic research in the processes of aging.

The largest organization of its kind in the world, Life Extension has a recorded membership of 140,000 as of January 2009. Members are provided with the latest scientific breakthroughs, services and products to empower them to make better health choices and live healthier, longer lives.

Life Extension publishes a magazine monthly entitled Life Extension to report current advances in health research and offer scientifically-referenced articles on the use of nutritional supplements.[4] An integrative team of Health Advisors (doctors, naturopaths, nutritionists, personal trainers) is accessible to members free of charge everyday. Life Extension also offers an exclusive line of premium-quality nutritional supplements through the Life Extension Foundation Buyers Club (LEFBC), a privately-held company.

The Life Extension Foundation is responsible for a long and distinguished list of achievements in promoting optimal health. It was the first to recommend the use of coenzyme Q10[5] and low-dose aspirin[6] therapy for heart health; the first to offer lycopene as a cancer-preventative;[7] the first to introduce melatonin to support immune function and to introduce S-Adenosyl methionine (SAMe) in the United States.[8]

Part of the organization’s profits from the sale of supplements and membership dues is used to fund independent research aimed at discovering new therapies for slowing and reversing the aging process. Life Extension has provided financial support to help fund scientific studies at major universities and biotechnical companies in the United States including: 21st Century Medicine, BioMarker Pharmaceuticals,[9] University of California at Riverside,[10] University of Texas, University of Arkansas,[11] National Institute of Aging and the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

The Life Extension Foundation also plays an active role as consumer advocate. Its involvement in political and bureaucratic developments helps facilitate public access to health products and information faster and less expensively.
