[edit] Playing career

Armitage played for Sheffield Forge & Rolling Mills, Walkley Amateurs, Wadsley Bridge, Sheffield Wednesday, Leeds United, Wigan Borough, Stoke City and Rhyl Athletic before joining Port Vale in December 1932. He started off with a first team spot but soon lost it to the more youthful Jack Round, as Armitage struggled with a knee injury. He left the club on a free transfer in May 1934.[2]
