Lathrop is a city located in San Joaquin County, California.The population is currently 17,429 in 2008 Lathrop’s current population is nearly 17,469 and is expected to reach 20,000 by 2012, with a projected “build out” population of 70,000 in next 25 years. Lathrop's average high temperature in January is 54 °F (12 °C) and the average low in January is 38 °F (3 °C). In July, the average high temperature is 94 °F (34 °C) and the average low in July is 61 °F (16 °C). The City of Lathrop is located in Northern San Joaquin Valley at the intersection of I-5 and 120 Freeways. Lathrop is centrally located within a 30-minute commute of Tracy, Manteca, Stockton, Lodi, Modesto, Livermore and Pleasanton.

Lathrop is located at 37°49′1″N 121°17′19″W / 37.81694°N 121.28861°W / 37.81694; -121.28861 (37.816904, -121.288633)[1]. The San Joaquin River is on the east side of Lathrop where the Mossdale development is. Lathrop's elevation is about 20 feet (7 m).

Lathrop was incorporated in 1989 making city 20 years old as of 2009, According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 22 square miles, of which, 22  square miles of it is land and 0;square miles (0.9 km²) of it (2.03%) is water.

Lathrop large growth will come from Mossdale Village, River Islands at Lathrop, South Lathrop Specific Plan, Central Lathrop Specific Plan, these large master plan areas will bring in 20,000 brand new dwelling units as well bring in 17,000 more jobs .

Neighboring towns include Manteca, Ripon, Escalon, and Tracy. Lathrop, is also in between the larger cities of Modesto and Stockton

Lathrop is served by The San Joaquin Regional Transit District, the Regional Transit Provider for San Joaquin County, which provides public transit services in the Stockton Metropolitan Area. RTD's Intercity fixed routes connect Stockton with Lathrop, Manteca, Ripon, Tracy, and Lodi. Lathrop is served by Routes 26 and 90 and 95. Lathrop also has an Altamont Commuter Express(ACE) station, which provides commuter service to the San Francisco Bay Area.As Lathrop population grows, the SJ transit district will expand its bus services and local routes in Lathrop.

Lathrop is served by Tracy Municipal Airport, located south of the city. There is no scheduled service from the airport. Additionally Stockton Metropolitan Airport [SCK]serves the community with a lengthy runway and F.A.A. control tower.

As of the census[2] of 2008,17,429 residents ? households, and ? families residing in the city. The population density was 637.6 people per square mile (246.2/km²). There were 2,991 housing units at an average density of 182.6/sq mi (70.5/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 50.92% White, 4.49% African American, 1.21% Native American, 13.36% Asian (mostly Filipino), 0.54% Pacific Islander, 21.11% from other races, and 8.38% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 38.59% of the population.

There were 2,908 households out of which 51.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.9% were married couples living together, 13.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 14.6% were non-families. 10.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 2.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.59 and the average family size was 3.82.

In the city the population was spread out with 34.8% under the age of 18, 9.0% from 18 to 24, 32.0% from 25 to 44, 18.1% from 45 to 64, and 6.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 30 years. For every 100 females there were 103.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 98.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $55,037, and the median income for a family was $57,319. Males had a median income of $40,406 versus $27,028 for females. The per capita income for the city was $16,032. About 7.7% of families and 9.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 12.6% of those under age 18 and 5.8% of those age 65 or over.

The City of Lathrop has a seven mile (11 km) radius population of 105,893 with an average household income of $63,072.

Lathrop is strategically centered between the Stockton, Modesto and Tracy submarkets – all within a 20 miles (32 km) radius with a combined current population of nearly 750,000 and an expectation that this number will approach 1 million within ten years.

Over 40,000 vehicles per day commute over the Altamont Pass into the Bay Area for employment. There is a strong demand for housing from the Bay Area as residents are moving to affordability.

  • Mossdale Village--Located west of I-5 and east of the San Joaquin River is Mossdale Village- consists of 2375 low density single family units, 662 medium density single family units and 208 high density single family units with a total estimate build out population of 10,796 residents approximately 55% of the community currently is built out.The Mossdale Village is divided into three (3) separate planning areas: Mossdale Landing; Mossdale Landing East; and Mossdale Landing South.

River Islands at Lathrop is a planned community consists of 6050 low density single family units, 3300 medium density single family units and 1650 high density single family units with a total estimated population of 31,867 that looks break ground in 2011.

  • 'Central Lathrop Specific Plan- it is located west of I-5, north of Louise Ave that will bring in 6,800 dwelling units, including low density, medium density high density, 4.5 million square feet of retail and office space on 1,540 acre site which will include room for big box stores which include a new Target, brand new Lathrop City hall, citys first high school called Lathrop High school, as wells plans for brand new Teen Center and Site for a power center.

Most of Lathrop is part of the Manteca Unified School District.But once River Islands Development is build students from that community will be part of Tracy High School District and Banta Elementary district. River Islands students will attend school in Tracy High School District and Banta Elementary district because the dividing line is the San Joaquin River which the River Islands Development will be build over that line.But Tracy High School District and Banta Elementary will build new state of arts schools in River Islands Development itself so students can attend right close to there homes once River Islands has large student body to build the new schools.Manteca Unified School District has 20 elementary schools, 5 high schools, and 2 continuation schools. There are no middle schools; elementary school continues through the 8th grade, with a mix of both year-round and traditional schools, Not all of the schools listed below are in Lathrop itself.

[edit] High School planned for Lathrop

Lathrop High School the first secondary school in the Manteca Unified School District located in Lathrop, opened in August 2008 it is Lathrop’s first high school opens for students Aug. 112008, The high school opened with 30 of its total 40 classrooms completed, along with the administration offices, library, cafeteria, the science wing, and the small gym. The rest of the classrooms as well as the Speech Arts building, large gym, swimming pool and stadium were scheduled for completion in December and January 2009. The small gym will be used by both the city and the school district under a joint-use agreement approved by the two agencies.

River Island High School is next planned high school to open in River Island Development and serve students from Tracy High School District and Banta Elementary district.The River Island students will attend high school their first few years bused to Tracy High school which the developers will pay for transportation, students will attend class in three portables.When the students from River Island reaches 81 students at Tracy High school, the students will be move back to a middle school in River Islands, and when there are 430 high school students, construction will begin on the permanent high school.Construction on the River Islands high school will be planned for three phases. Phase I will accommodate 850 students, Phase II will hold 850 more, and Phase III will make room for another 500 students.

Lathrop now contracts out with the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Department for police services, while maintaining a "joint" fire department with neighboring Manteca.
