Lassiter High School is a public high school located north of Atlanta in Marietta, Georgia, United States.
[edit] HistoryLassiter High School was established in 1981. It was awarded the Georgia Public School of Excellence in 1992,1999 and most recently 2008. In 2000, it was named a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. It also received the Siemens Award as the top Advanced Placement School in the state of Georgia in 2008 and was recognized in USA Today.[citation needed] The school was also recognized by Newsweek Magazine as one of the top public schools in the country in 2007.[citation needed] Mr. Chris Shaw, the current principal at Lassiter, was recognized as Georgia High School Principal of the year in 2008 by the PTSA.[citation needed] [edit] EtymologyLassiter High School was named for Leamond N. Lassiter who was a member of the Cobb County Board of Education for 12 years and contributed to education in Cobb County during his service. Lassiter's grandchildren attended the school, and his great grandchildren attended Lassiter in 2008. [edit] Sports & ClubsLassiter has won 24 state championships in Georgia High School Association-sanctioned sports.[citation needed] The baseball team has won two state championships most recently in 2006. The baseball program won a national championship in 1999.[citation needed] The boy's lacrosse team has won 3 state championships in the last five years.[citation needed] The girl's swim team has won back to back state championships in 2008 and 2009.[citation needed] The girl's fast pitch softball team won a state championship in 2007.[citation needed] The football program had the associated press coach of the year and offensive player of the year in the state of Georgia in 2008.[citation needed] [edit] Sports

[edit] MusicThe Lassiter High School Marching Band won the Bands of America Grand National Championships in 1998 and 2002 under the direction of Alfred Watkins.[16] The percussion ensemble has performed at the Midwest Clinic. In November 2007 they took the first place position at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention (PASIC). In April 2009, the band represented the state of Georgia for the celebration in Hawaii of their 50 years of statehood.[citation needed] The orchestra has won the National Orchestra Cup and has attended the Midwest Clinic multiple times. The Orchestra has played at other events such as the Georgia Music Educators Association conference in Savannah, GA. On occasion, the orchestra has a chance to play with the musical group, Barrage.[citation needed] The Choir has performed with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra.[citation needed] [edit] Frank Fillman StadiumIn the fall of 2007, Lassiter High School began a campaign to refurbish their football stadium, dubbed "Fixin' The Frank!", "The Frank" being the nickname for Frank Fillman Stadium. The school erected a JumboTron video scoreboard and put down artificial turf on the playing surface. They also repainted the entire stadium seating and press box. This first phase of renovation cost $1.2 million, paid for by private corporations and sponsorships.
