Lafayette High School (LHS) is a high school located in Lafayette, Louisiana. The school's enrollment is around 2303 students[1]. Students from around the district can enter Lafayette High through several programs, including Gifted and Talented, Special Education, Visually Impaired, Hearing Impaired, English as a Second Language, Arts Academy, or through the Academy of Health Careers. LHS has approximately 13 sports and athletics teams and approximately 71 clubs and organizations.
[edit] ProfileLafayette High School is one of the largest comprehensive high schools in the state.[citation needed] The student population includes students from Acadian, Creole, Hispanic, African American, Asian, Semitic and other ethnicities. Lafayette High School was designated a Louisiana Distinguished School as well as a national finalist in the Secondary Effective Schools' Recognition Program.[citation needed] The curriculum includes gifted, advanced placement, honors, and regular level courses. The arts programs include concert band, marching band, symphonic band, musical productions, and theatrical and visual arts. The school also has a communications department, and a vocational career program (including the Academy of Health Careers). Special Education Programs include those which cater to students who are multi-handicapped, learning disabled, gifted, hearing impaired, and/ or visually impaired. There is also a French Immersion program. [edit] Academic Programs[edit] Gifted and TalentedLafayette High School is the only high school in the Lafayette Parish Public Schools to have this program[[.]] This is for students who passed the Gifted and Talented exam. This program allows for accelerated growth for students who need this kind of education. Lafayette High School has many gifted classes for these individuals. Gifted classes are generally more challenging and require more dedication and hard work from students. Each year, many students from this Gifted program also acquire college scholarships due to their excellence. [edit] Academy of Health CareersLafayette High School is one of the "Schools of Choice" for the Lafayette Parish Public Schools. This means that it has an Academy of Careers, a program that the school system started. Students who want to work in the medical field may get high school education and first-hand experience here. [edit] Programs for the HandicappedLafayette High School also has programs such as hearing impaired, visually impaired, mentally retarded, etc. These programs also handicapped students to also participate in school like normal children. [edit] French ImmersionThis program is generally for those who speak primarily French or has a very excellent French background. Students learn different subjects solely in French, such as mathematics, English, social studies, and the sciences. Most students in French Immersion have been in the program since elementary school. [edit] ClubsLafayette High has a large number of clubs from which students can choose. In all, there are 41 clubs. They are, in alphabetical order: The Quiz Bowl team won the Cajun Quiz Bowl Tournament in 1998. [edit] SportsIn 2009, the girl's varsity bowling team made it to the state finals for the third year in a row, and defeated Denham Springs High School in the semi-finals, and St. Scholastica in the finals in order to win the state championship. The team was captained by Aimee Van Arsdale and had Katherine Kokenge as co-captain. In 2008, the men's basketball team won the state basketball championship for the first time in the school's history. This was their first trip to the "Top 28" state basketball tournament in over 60 years. In 2009 the women's basketball team made it to the state finals, and lost to Chapelle. This was the first time in school history that the girls had won the district championship. In 2004, the men's soccer team won the Division I state championship by defeating Jesuit (New Orleans) 1-0 in the final. It was the first team championship for LHS in any sport.[citation needed] The men's soccer program was state runnerups in 2005, 2003, and 1998 as well as semi-finalists in 1997 and 1996. In 2006, the women's soccer became the first female athletic team to win a state title for Lafayette High, defeating Barbe (Lake Charles) 1-0 for the Division I title. This was the middle year of three consecutive trips to the state finals, bookended by shootout losses in 2005 and 2007. (Source: LAPrepSoccer and LHSAA) Both the men's and women's swim teams are highly successful and among the best programs in the state. The women's team was runner up at the 1998 Division I state championships and finished third in 1997. LHS has dominated at the regional level since splitting from the Baton Rouge region in 1995, winning numerous team championships. Multiple LHS swimmers have won state championships in individual and relay events. Diane Tennison (class of 1999) and Kendra Trahan (class of 2000) were Swimming World All-Americans. LHS alumni have gone on to successful collegiate swimming careers at schools including Stanford, Virginia Tech[2], Florida[3], Kentucky, Georgia Tech[4], and University of Louisiana at Monroe. In 2005, The band was a finalist at the Bands of America Regional Competition in St.Petersburg,Florida, placing 8th. In 2007, The band was a finalist at the Bands of America Regional Competition in Houston,Texas, placing 6th. In 2008, the band was a finalist at the Bands of America Grand National Championship in Indianapolis, Indiana and a finalist at the Bands of America Super Regional in Atlanta, Georgia. The band placed 12th out of 92 bands at the Grand National Championships and 3rd at the Super Regional Competition, also capturing the Music Performance Caption.
