La Madrastra (The Stepmother) is a Mexican telenovela that was produced by Televisa and broadcast on Univision in the United States in 2005. Rebroadcast in the United States on Univision's sister network, Telefutura.

It is a remake of the Chilean production of the same name of 1981 (which was originally written by Arturo Moya Grau and directed by Oscar Rodriguez). Two other productions were made as Vivir un poco (1985) with Angélica Aragón and Para toda la vida (1996) with Ofelia Medina in the starring roles.

The show got attention in the United States via E!'s The Soup which would have weekly recaps of the show and clips of its more outrageous moments. Host Joel McHale would often get excited talking about it, at one point stating "I can think of fifteen network shows I understand that aren't this good!"

[edit] Plot

A terrible tragedy puts an end to a group of friends' vacation in Aruba. María (Victoria Ruffo) hears a gunshot and finds her friend Patricia (Monserrat Olivier) dead; in the confusion of the moment, she picks up the gun. María is thus found guilty of murder and is sentenced to life in jail. Her husband, Esteban (César Évora), an important businessman, does not believe her proclamations of innocence, and when he returns to Mexico he divorces her, buys the silence of all who were with them on the trip, and tells his young children that their mother died in an accident. He then erects a painting of another woman, whom he names Montserrat, above the fireplace

Twenty years later, María is freed from prison as a result of her good conduct and returns to Mexico City in search of vengeance. She wants to find Patricia's real killer and confront Esteban, whom she now hates for abandoning her, but what she wishes for most is to have her children, Héctor (Mauricio Aspe) and Estrella (Ana Layevska), back.

The first thing that María does when she arrives is to confront everyone who was with her on the trip: Esteban; Servando (Lorenzo de Rodas), one of Esteban's business associates at the Empresas San Román; Demetrio (Guillermo García Cantú), Esteban's corporate lawyer; Daniela (Cecilia Gabriela), Demetrio's wife and the aunt of Esteban's fiancée, Ana Rosa (Martha Julia); Bruno (René Casados), another of Esteban's business associates; Fabiola (Sabine Moussier), Bruno's wife who is nonetheless in love with Esteban; and Alba (Jacqueline Andere) and Carmela (Margarita Isabel), Esteban's two aunts. Everyone is horrified to see María, and she puts fear and doubt into them when she tells them that she did not kill Patricia, and that the real murderer has lived among them for the past twenty years.

María remarries Esteban so that she can win back her children's love; however, Héctor and Estrella are unaware that María is their real mother and loathe her, having idealized the woman in the portrait. Plus, María must deal with the intrigues of Esteban's aunts, Alba and Carmela, as well as his associates, primarily Fabiola, who has always loved Esteban and resents María for winning his heart despite her low socioeconomic background.

María is also stunned to learn that Esteban has a third child, Ángel (Miguel Ángel Biaggio), whose mother Esteban refuses to name. Ángel is a frequently ill and insecure young man, and María accepts him immediately and treats him with love, and vice versa. However, it is eventually revealed that Ángel is not Esteban's son, but that of one of his aunts. To avoid scandal, Esteban takes Ángel as his own child.

[edit] Who killed Patricia?

Following the initial airing in 2005, La Madrastra was rerun in 2007 in the 6pm slot on Televisa. For this airing, producer Salvador Mejia did not want the series to be a simple repeat, so the final ten episodes were re-filmed with a new killer. Patricia's murderer, in the original 2005 airing, is Demetrio, who committed the crime after Patricia threatened to reveal the fact that Demetrio is a cross-dresser. In the alternate 2007 version, the murderer is Fabiola, who killed Patricia after she threatened to reveal that Fabiola had recently given birth to a deformed son whom she and Bruno had subsequently abandoned in a Canadian institution.

[edit] Trivia about the novela

The novela was rerun in 2007 in the 6:00 P.M. slot on Televisa. Ten episodes were added to the end, with a different murderer from the original broadcast run. The murderer the first time around, in 2005, was Demetrio, portrayed by Guillermo Garcia Cantu. In the second version, in 2007, producer Salvador Mejia did not want to repeat the first version, so the assassin was Fabiola, portrayed by Sabine Moussier. We founded only Mexican Telenovelas dubbed in Hiligaynon version in the Philippines now by regionals in Western Visayas, played by GMA TV 6 Iloilo. It was the most watched novela in the 2005-2006 season. Following a fan writing campaign, several new miniseries specials of La Madrastra will air on Televisa beginning in the Spring of 2009.
