La Costa Canyon High School is one of the high schools in the San Dieguito Union High School District. Located on 88 acres (360,000 m²) in south Carlsbad in northwest San Diego County, La Costa Canyon opened in September, 1996. The students attending La Costa Canyon live in Encinitas and south Carlsbad. These communities include both beach and agricultural areas and lie in proximity to the University of California, San Diego, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the Salk Institute, and Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation. La Costa Canyon High School was honored as a 1999 California Distinguished School and was named a National Blue Ribbon School in 2001[citation needed].

The school mascot is the Maverick, but horses are better suited for the general area.

[edit] General Information

2,548 students were enrolled at La Costa Canyon High School in 2009, with a senior class of about 700. The average number of students who drive into school is 1567. The pupil-teacher ratio is 34:1. The average SAT score is in the 1150-1200 range, making LCCHS one of the most academically acclaimed public schools in the state and ranked 232 by USNews.com out of 91,957 public schools in the US. Over 97 percent of the students are college bound. 77% of the student body is Caucasian and 17% of the student body is Latino, the rest a mix. Graduates of La Costa Canyon typically attend universities in the UC and CSU system, in addition to private universities around the United States. Popular choices among past graduates are most UC schools, and many Ivy League and other comparable institutions.

[edit] School day

La Costa Canyon has a 7:45 am start time and a 2:30 pm end time, with a 35 minute lunch at 11:55 am. The schedule is adjusted for school assemblies, minimum days (end time at 12:00 pm), and 1-Hour Late Start days. La Costa Canyon operates on a rotating block schedule. Students attend three of their six classes on one day with each class 115 to 120 minutes in length. The remaining three classes meet the following day. Most students have 6 classes, with the exception of those who have already met graduation requirements or those who are taking off-campus courses. Some optional zero-period (before the start of a normal school day) and 7th period (after the end of a normal school day) classes were previously available, but due to state-wide budget cuts to education, these options have been eliminated.

[edit] Faculty

The faculty consists of a principal, three assistant principals, one dean, six counselors, a media-specialist, and over 125 certificated staff members. Approximately 70% have degrees beyond a Bachelor's Degree. Over the past 13 years, La Costa Canyon has seen 7 different principals. The newest administrative additions are Kyle Ruggles, the new 09-10 principal, and two new 09-10 assistant principals: Bjorn Paige and Mark Van Over. They join existing assistant principal Doug Kamon.[1]

La Costa Canyon offers a highly competitive full men's and/or women's athletic program in the following sports: basketball, baseball, football, softball, wrestling, soccer, golf, cross country, track and field, gymnastics, tennis, volleyball, field hockey, swimming, water polo, and lacrosse.
