Krauchthal is a municipality in the district of Burgdorf in the canton of Bern in Switzerland.
[edit] HistoryKrauchthal was first mentioned around 1108-22 as Crouchtal and around 1181-82 as Crochtal.[1] [edit] GeographyKrauchthal has an area of 19.4 square kilometers (7.5 sq mi). Of this area, 43.8% is used for agricultural purposes, while 49.9% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 6% is settled (buildings or roads) and the remainder (0.3%) is non-productive (rivers or glaciers).[2] Krauchthal includes the village of Krauchthal, Hettiswil and Hub im Tal as well as Dieterswald and Thorberg in on the hill. [edit] DemographicsKrauchthal has a population (as of 2007[update]) of 2,284, of which 3.0% are foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has grown at a rate of 8%. Most of the population (as of 2000[update]) speaks German (91.3%), with Albanian being second most common ( 3.1%) and French being third ( 0.8%). In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP which received 47.5% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the SPS (18%), the FDP (13.3%) and the Green Party (6.6%). The age distribution of the population (as of 2000[update]) is children and teenagers (0-19 years old) make up 24.9% of the population, while adults (20-64 years old) make up 64.8% and the seniors (over 64 years old) make up 10.4%. The entire Swiss population is generally well educated. In Krauchthal about 77.9% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either University or a Fachhochschule). Krauchthal has an unemployment rate of 0.95%. As of 2005[update], there were 165 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 56 businesses involved in this sector. 114 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 23 businesses in this sector. 255 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 40 businesses in this sector.[2] The historical population is given in the following table:[1]
