Knocklyon (Irish: Cnoc Líomhna) is a suburb of Dublin, Ireland, south west of Dublin city and north of the Dublin Mountains. Relatively new as an area independent of its neighbours Templeogue, Firhouse and Rathfarnham, it was not marked as a separate entity on maps until recently. The postcode for the area is Dublin 16.
[edit] Location and accessKnocklyon is primarily to the east of the M50 motorway and comprises residential housing including the Idrone, Beverly, Templeroan, Dargle Wood, Orlagh and Woodfield Estates. To the west of the M50 estates such as Glenvara Park, Castlefield Manor and Glenlyon, Firhouse is off the Ballycullen Road. Its now linked to the rest of Knocklyon by a footbridge. [edit] AmenitiesA focal point for the local community is the area comprising the local Superquinn supermarket and other smaller shops as well as the Parish church and the community centre. The area has a number of open spaces within the residential estates and playing pitches for Knocklyon United Football Club (Soccer) and Ballyboden St. Endas G.A.A Club. The area has a Scout hall and is home to the South Dublin Model Railway Club, which has its own premises. The area has two pubs. [edit] ReligionThe Roman Catholic Parish of Knocklyon was established in 1974 and placed under the patronage of St Colmcille and is run for the Dublin Archdiocese by the Carmelite order of priests. The church, primary school (consisting of both a Junior and Senior school to deal with the large numbers is one of the largest in Ireland) and community school all bear the name St Colmcille.
