 Kinnelon is a Borough in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. As of the United States 2000 Census, the borough population was 9,365. It is a low density, suburban community, with many parks and trails. Kinnelon was formed as a borough by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature on February 20, 1922, from portions of Pequannock Township, based on the results of a referendum passed on March 21, 1922.[7]
[edit] GeographyKinnelon is located at 40°59′28″N 74°22′19″W / 40.991069°N 74.372051°W (40.991069, -74.372051).[8] According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 18.8 square miles (48.7 km2), of which, 17.9 square miles (46.3 km2) of it is land and 0.9 square miles (2.4 km2) of it (4.94%) is water. The borough is home to Silas Condict County Park as well as sections of Pyramid Mountain County Park. Its largest lake is Lake Kinnelon, which is within Smoke Rise, a private gated community. The Fayson Lakes area of Kinnelon was developed as a vacation resort. Tripod Rock is located in Kinnelon's Pyramid Mountain Natural Historical Area. New York City is 30 miles (48 km) from Kinnelon and there are various historic sites in Morristown, New Jersey which is 30 minutes south of Kinnelon. Accommodations can be found at various hotels in Parsippany-Troy Hills, New Jersey which is within 20 minutes of Kinnelon. Accommodations can also be found at the Butler Guest House, which is within 4 miles (6.4 km) of every area of town. Splitrock Reservoir is 625 acres (2.53 km2) of wilderness located in northern New Jersey on the borders of Kinnelon and Rockaway Township. [edit] Demographics
As of the census[4] of 2000, there were 9,365 people, 3,062 households, and 2,685 families residing in the borough. The population density was 523.5 people per square mile (202.1/km2). There were 3,123 housing units at an average density of 174.6/sq mi (67.4/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 95.60% White, 0.58% African American, 0.04% Native American, 2.84% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 0.23% from other races, and 0.61% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.33% of the population. There were 3,062 households out of which 45.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 80.6% were married couples living together, 5.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 12.3% were non-families. 9.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 3.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.06 and the average family size was 3.27. In the borough the population was spread out with 30.0% under the age of 18, 4.3% from 18 to 24, 27.0% from 25 to 44, 29.7% from 45 to 64, and 9.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 99.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.9 males. The median income for a household in the borough was $105,991, and the median income for a family was $110,593. Males had a median income of $79,870 versus $45,069 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $45,796. About 2.3% of families and 2.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 2.9% of those under age 18 and 0.6% of those age 65 or over. [edit] Government[edit] Local governmentKinnelon is governed under the Borough form of New Jersey municipal government. The government consists of a Mayor and a Borough Council comprising six council members, with all positions elected at large. A Mayor is elected directly by the voters to a four-year term of office. The Borough Council consists of six members elected to serve three-year terms on a staggered basis, with two seats coming up for election each year.[1] As of 2009, the Mayor of Kinnelon is Glenn Sisco (term ends December 31, 2010).[10] Members of the Borough Council are Council President Daniel Colucci (2009), Stephen Cobell (2010), Robert W. Collins (2011), James Freda (2010), Ronald Mondello (2011) and Evan Swalling (2009).[11] [edit] Federal, state and county representationKinnelon Borough is in the Eleventh Congressional District and is part of New Jersey's 26th Legislative District.[12] New Jersey's Eleventh Congressional District, covering western portions of Essex County, all of Morris County, and sections of Passaic County, Somerset County and Sussex County, is represented by Rodney Frelinghuysen (R, Harding Township). New Jersey is represented in the Senate by Frank Lautenberg (D, Cliffside Park) and Bob Menendez (D, Hoboken). For the 2008-2009 Legislative Session, the 26th District of the New Jersey Legislature is represented in the State Senate by Joseph Pennacchio (R, Pine Brook) and in the Assembly by Alex DeCroce (R, Morris Plains) and Jay Webber (R, Morris Plains).[13] The Governor of New Jersey is Jon Corzine (D, Hoboken).[14] Morris County is governed by a seven-member Board of Chosen Freeholders, who are elected to three-year terms on a staggered basis, with two or three seats up for election each year.[15] As of 2008[update], Morris County's Freeholders are Freeholder Director Margaret Nordstrom,[16] Deputy Freeholder Director Gene F. Feyl,[17] Douglas R. Cabana,[18] William J. Chegwidden,[19] John J. Murphy, James W. Murray[20] and Jack J. Schrier.[21][22] [edit] EducationThe Kinnelon Public Schools is composed of approximately 2,200 students in grades K-12. Schools in the district (with 2006–07 enrollment data from the National Center for Education Statistics[23] are Kiel School for grades PreK-2 (463 students), Stonybrook School for grades 3-5 (531 students), Pearl R. Miller Middle School for grades 6-8 (533 students) and Kinnelon High School (668 students).
