The King of Bahrain was a title created in February 2002 when the then Emir of Bahrain, Hamad ibn `Isa Al Khalifah, invested himself as king his third year of reign. Between 1783 and 1971 the rulers of the country were previously titled as Hakim of Bahrain, and from 1971 until 2002 as Emirs of the State of Bahrain. Like the hakim and emirs before him, the king is the head of state and wields nearly absolute power.
