Lieutenant General Khalid Shameem Wynne, HI(M), afwc, fsc(g), psc, (born 28 August 1953) is a Pakistan Army general who is the current commander of the Southern Command and the XII Corps based in Quetta.[1]
[edit] Early lifeWynne comes from an army background. His father, Colonel Arshad Shameem Wynne served in the Pakistan Army till 1972. His unit was the 20th battalion of the Punjab Regiment. He got his earlier education from various cantonment schools all over Pakistan and joined Cadet College Hasan Abdal as special entry in 1969 after matriculation. He held a Colour for being a member of the College cricket team. [edit] Military careerAfter his intermediate examination in 1971, he joined the Army, passing out in April 1972 in the 1st Special War Course to join his father's battalion, 20 Punjab Regiment. During his career of over 35 years he graduated from Command and Staff College Quetta, Fuhrungs Academy in Hamburg, Germany and the National Defence College, Islamabad. He holds a masters degree in War Studies from Quaid-i-Azam University. [edit] Command appointmentsLt Gen Wynne has held various command, staff and instructional appointments during his military career. He has commanded his own 20th Battalion of the Punjab Regiment (second to none), two Infantry Brigades, including the prestigious 323 Infantry Brigade in Siachen and 41st Infantry Division in Quetta. He has also been a Brigade Major of two Infantry Brigades. [edit] Staff and instructional appointmentsOn the academic side, he has held various instructional appointments and remained on the faculty of School of Infantry and Tactics Quetta, Command and Staff College Quetta and Pakistan Military Academy Kakul. Lt Gen Wynne also remained Chief of Staff in a Corps Headquarters and Commandant School of Infantry and Tactics Quetta. He was the Deputy Chief of General Staff (DCGS) from 1 June 2006, where he got promoted to the rank of a Lieutenant General on 7 March 2007 and put on his new rank on 1 April 2007. [edit] SpeculationLt Gen Wynne will be the senior most Lieutenant General at the time of the retirement of the current Chief of Army Staff, General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, and he is expected to be given one of the top two coveted posts of the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee or Chief of Army Staff.
