Kayla is one of the names of the Beta Israel community among their neighbours, after which the Kayla language is named.^[1] Yona Bogale claimed that the name stems from the Tigrinya word for artisans, and on the broader sense excommunicated people (as Yeshaq I of Ethiopia has denied the right of inheritance of all non-Christians).^[1][2] Speakers of Agaw languages, such as Qemant citizens, told researchers that Kayla means "one who has not crossed the stream" or "he or they that have not crossed".^[1] This refers to the observance of Shabbat rules among Ethiopian Jews, necessitating the avoidance of activities prohibited on Shabbat.^[1] In modern-day English speaking countries, Kayla is also a popular female given name. In the United States it reached #7 on the Most Popular Girl Names in 1994. The name can mean 'pure' in Greek, 'Crown of Laurels' in Latin, 'beloved' in Hebrew, and 'Wise Child' in Arabic.
