Joseph Nyumah Boakai (born November 30, 1944) is the Vice-President of Liberia. He is Vice-President to fellow Unity Party member Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf.

Joseph Boakai was born on 30 November 1944 in Worsonga, Foya District, Lofa County^[1] to illiterate parents,^[2] He is married to Kartumu Boakai and they have 4 children.^[1] Boakai is a religious Christian, and is a Deacon of the Effort Baptist Church.

Boakai is a graduate of the College of West Africa, the University of Liberia, and Kansas State University, which he attended on a USAID grant.^[2]

From 1983 to 1985, he served as Minister of Agriculture under President Samuel Doe.^[2] While Minister of Agriculture, Boakai chaired the 15 nation West African Rice Development Association.^[1]
