Jorge Manuel Almeida Gomes de Andrade, OIH(Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈʒɔɾʒ(ɨ) ɐ̃ˈdɾad(ɨ)]; born 9 April 1978) is a Portuguese football central defender, currently a free agent.
[edit] Club careerAndrade made his professional debuts with hometown club Estrela da Amadora in 1997, helping the club to two consecutive eighth first division places from 1998-2000. Andrade immediately caught the eye, and after that was on the move north, to FC Porto. He was Porto’s most-used player in the 2001-02 Champions League, playing 12 times as the team reached the second group phase. After Portugal’s unsuccessful 2002 World Cup campaign, Andrade was snapped up by then-big-spending Deportivo La Coruña in a move that cost the Galicians in excess of €12 million.[1] On 21 April 2004, during a UEFA Champions League semi-finals match against former team Porto, Andrade was sent off by referee Markus Merk for a kick on Deco. The gesture was of a friendly nature, but Merk was eluded by it, and immediately sent Andrade off.[2][3]He was forced to serve a one-match ban.[4] Andrade signed for Juventus in summer 2007, for approximately €10 million.[5] In a match against Roma on 23 September 2007, he badly broke his left kneecap and missed the rest of the 2007–08 season.[6] In the team's 2008 pre-season, Andrade suffered the same injury[7] and missed the entire 2008-09 season. In a press release dated 7 August, Juventus stated:
That was the third in a year and the fourth left knee surgery Andrade had in his career. The Turin-based club wrote off his salary as well as part of the transfer fee for the fiscal year, though Andrade has stated he hopes to return playing at the highest level. On 8 April 2009, Juventus and Andrade reached an agreement, and the player's remaining contract was canceled, leaving him free to find another club.[9][10] After being released from Juventus, he went on trial to Málaga, but he was not given a contract and was again free to search a new club. [11] On 24 October 2009, news emerged that Andrade is training with English League Two side Notts County in a bid to gain a contract, which was confirmed on 5November by manager Hans Backe.[12] [edit] Club statistics
[edit] International careerAndrade made his debut for Portugal in April 2001, and was part of the nation's squads at the 2002 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2004, scoring three goals in 50 caps.[13] He appeared in five games during the Euro 2008 qualifying campaign, collecting his last cap on 22 August 2007 against Armenia. During 2004 he scored an own goal at the Euro 2004 Semi-Finals Against Netherlands in there 2-1 win [edit] Personal lifeAndrade, along with fellow Portuguese internationals Miguel, Nani, and Nélson, is a descendant from the Cape Verde islands, previously a Portuguese colony. He visited his homeland in 2006 and did some work with grassroots football during his stay. [edit] References
