[edit] Playing career

Playing for the Regina Pats, Eberle scored a team-high 28 goals in 2006–07 as a rookie. He started his second WHL season by earning WHL Player of the Month honours, totaling 14 goals, 8 assists and 22 points in 13 games for the Pats. Midway through the season, he was chosen to compete in the CHL Top Prospects Game in Edmonton and would finish 2007–08 with 75 points; his 42 goals were third in league scoring. He also added a league-high 9 game winning goals. Eberle was selected to the WHL East First All-Star Team and received the Doc Seaman Trophy as WHL scholastic player of the year (beating out Jared Cowen of the Spokane Chiefs).[1] In the off-season, he was selected in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft by the Edmonton Oilers. Scouts listed Eberle as an offensive-minded forward with his strength and speed as the two areas most needing improvement.[who?]

After completing the 2008–09 WHL season with 74 points in 61 games, Eberle was assigned by the Oilers to the Springfield Falcons of the American Hockey League (AHL) for the remainder of their season, where he tallied 3 goals and 9 points in 9 games.

Eberle attended the Edmonton Oilers main training camp in 2009. After the final pre-season game he was returned back to the Western Hockey League to continue playing for the Regina Pats.

Eberle played for Team Canada's under-18 team at the 2007 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament, but failed to register a point and was kept from a medal.[2] He later competed for the under-18s at the 2008 IIHF World U18 Championships in Russia where he found much more success, helping Team Canada to a gold medal finish against Russia in the final. Eberle earned player of the game honours in the first round-robin game against Germany[3] and finished the tournament with 10 points in 7 games, second in team scoring to Cody Hodgson.

In his third WHL season, Eberle was selected to the Team Canada's under-20 team for the 2009 World Junior Championships in Ottawa. In the semi-finals, on January 3, 2009, Eberle was named player of the game[4] after scoring two goals and the shootout-winner against Russia in a 6–5 win. Eberle dramatically scored his second goal of the night with just 5.4 seconds left in regulation to force extra time and the eventual shootout, in which he shot first and scored.[5] Defeating Sweden 5–1 in the final, Eberle helped Canada to a record-tying fifth straight gold medal and was named by the coaching staff as one of the team's best three players.[6] At the conclusion of the tournament, Eberle was third in tournament scoring with 13 points (6 goals, 7 assists).[7]

[edit] Personal life

Eberle attended Archbishop M.C. O'Neill High School in Regina, Saskatchewan, during the hockey season, and graduated from Bishop O’Byrne High School in Calgary in June 2008.[1] Eberle has been in two Nike commercials. Both were advertising Nike's new training line, "Force Fate".
