Johann Wilhelm Ritter (16 December 1776 – 23 January 1810) was a German chemist and physicist. He was born in Samitz bei Haynau, Silesia (now Chojnów, Poland).

Ritter made very important discoveries regarding electrochemistry and ultraviolet light. He is credited with discovering the ultraviolet part of the electromagnetic spectrum and the dry pile electric battery. In 1800 after Nicholson and Carlisle used electrolysis to decompose water into hydrogen and oxygen, Ritter duplicated the experiment with a rearranged set of electrodes to collect the two gases separately, he also discovered the process of electroplating.

He died young in Munich, possibly due to using his own body in electrical experiments.
