Lupe Joseph Arenas (born December 12, 1925 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa) was a Running Back for the San Francisco 49ers (1951-57). He was drafted from University of Nebraska-Omaha in the 8th round of the 1951 NFL draft. In 7 seasons he had 203 rushing attempts for 987 yards and 10 touchdowns, 46 receptions for 675 yards and 6 touchdowns, 6 interceptions, 124 punt returns for 774 yards and 1 touchdown and 139 kickoff returns for 3,798 yards and 1 touchdown. He led the NFL in kickoff returns in 1953 by having 16 for 551 yards. His longest was for 82 yards. His 27.32 yards per kick return currently ranks 6th on the NFL's All-Time Kick Return Average List. From 1963 to 1986 Arenas served as wide receivers coach for the Houston Cougars football team under College Football Hall of Fame coach Bill Yeoman. |
