Manuel Jesualdo Ferreira (born 24 May 1946) is a Portuguese football manager currently managing FC Porto of the Portuguese Liga.
[edit] Coaching career[edit] Early careerFerreira was the assistant manager for Portuguese national football team in the 1990s, and manager for the under-21 national team, until the 1999–00 season. He reached the 12th place for Alverca, in 2000–2001. He was the assistant manager of Benfica, since 2001, ending as the manager in 2002, and remained in charge of the "Águias" team until November 2002 when was replaced by José Antonio Camacho and returned to assistant manager. In 2003 he was signed by SC Braga as manager. On the summer of 2006, Ferreira signed for Boavista but on 16 August, resigned in order to sign a one-year contract with FC Porto. Porto president Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa officially announced Jesualdo Ferreira as the team manager on 18 August, the same day their contract was signed. His career in Porto has been filled with good results, winning the national championship three times. [edit] Académica CoimbraJesualdo Ferreira worked for many teams. In 1984–85, he took over at Académica Coimbra and the club finished the season in 7th place. He also coached Estrela da Amadora but the club was relegated to Liga de Honra in the 1990–91 season. Jesualdo Ferreira became famous when he took over at the Portuguese U-21 national team, coaching skilled players like Maniche. [edit] Alverca and BenficaFerreira arrived at FC Alverca in 2000–01. With good results, Jesualdo then left for Benfica. After a poor string of results, he was fired by President, Vieira after a losing a cup match at home to third division side, Gondomar S.C.. [edit] BragaOn 19 April 2003, SC Braga called Ferreira to manage the team. He led the team to beating C.D. Nacional 4–1. In the seasons of 2003–04, 2004–05, and 2005–06, Braga made fantastic League runs, and with players like João Tomás and Wender, they fought for the title in 2004–05. Braga reached 5th place (2003-04) and twice in 4th place (2004-05 and 2005–06). [edit] PortoBoavista signed Jesualdo Ferreira, but suddenly FC Porto offered him a contract, and he arrived at the Estádio do Dragão on 18 August 2006, after the Portuguese SuperCup final. Jesualdo worked with Ricardo Quaresma, Anderson, Pepe, Ernesto Farías, Lucho González, Raul Meireles, Paulo Assunção, José Bosingwa and Lisandro López. The team won the championship in 2007 and 2008. Later on, on 2009, the Dragões again finished first in the League and excelled in the UEFA Champions League campaign, having qualified to the quarter finals and finishing in a 2–2 away draw in the first leg against 2008 Champions League holders Manchester United, having lost later 0–1 at Estádio do Dragão. Curiously, Ferreira and Jose Mourinho crossed paths in the 1980s, when the former Chelsea FC coach was a student at the Lisbon Superior Institute for Physical Education and the current Porto coach was a teacher there. In 2002, when he was briefly Benfica coach, Mourinho refused to accept the appointment of Ferreira as his assistant. And in February 2005, Mourinho had a swipe at Ferreira in his weekly column for Portuguese magazine Record Dez. Comparing himself with Ferreira, Mourinho wrote: "One is a coach with a 30-year career, the other with a three-year one. The one with 30 years has never won anything; the one with three years has won a lot. The one who has coached for 30 years has an enormous career; the one with three years has a small career. The one with a 30-year career will be forgotten when he ends it; the one with three could end it right now and he could never be erased from history. This could be the story of a donkey who worked for 30 years but never became a horse". Despite these claims by Mourinho, Jesualdo in fact, made history by becoming the first Portuguese coach to win 3 consecutive titles in Portugal, a feat that Mourinho never achieved[1]. Mourinho also was Ferreira's assistant in 1990–91, in Estrela Amadora. Another FC Porto coach, Jose Couceiro, worked with Jesualdo many times. Firstly, Ferreira was a coach in Atletico CP, and Couceiro was a player there. Couceiro moved to Torreense, with Jesualdo as coach. And finally, in 1991–92, Couceiro joined Estrela Amadora, again with Ferreira as coach. On June 2, 2009 the FC Porto coach has renewed his contract unil June 2011[2]. [edit] Honours
He is the also the only Portuguese coach to win three championships in a row. [edit] References[edit] External links
