Jean-Luc Mélenchon in 2008
Jean-Luc Mélenchon (born 19 August 1951 in Tangier) is a former member of the Senate of France, representing the Essonne department. He left the Socialist Party in November 2008 to found the Left Party with French deputy Marc Dolez[1].
As leader of the Left Party, he joined the Left Front before the 2009 European elections and was selected as the coalition's top candidate in the South-West region. His list won 8.16%, a surprisingly good result, and he was elected to the European Parliament.
