Jaya Bhaduri or Jaya Bachchan (9 April 1948) (Bengali: জয়া ভাদুড়ী বচ্চন, Hindi: जया बच्चन), is an Indian actress. She is an alumna of the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune. Jaya is married to Amitabh Bachchan, a legend in Hindi cinema. Her son Abhishek Bachchan is an actor. After appearing as a child actor in Satyajit Ray's Mahanagar (1963), she made her first screen role as an adult in Guddi (1971) directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee, and gave some of her famous performances in films such as Jawani Diwani (1972), Koshish, Anamika, Piya Ka Ghar and Bawarchi. She appeared alongside her husband Amitabh Bachchan in films such as Zanjeer (1973), Abhimaan (1973), Chupke Chupke (1975) and Sholay (1975). She restricted her film work in the coming years and after Silsila in 1981, took a sabbatical for films, only to return with Govind Nihlani's Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa (1998). During her career, she won three Filmfare Best Actress Awards, three Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Awards, and was awarded the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007.
[edit] Early lifeJaya was born in a Bengali family to Indira and Taroon Kumar Bhaduri, writer, journalist and stage artist in Jabalpur. She studied in St. Joseph's Convent School, Bhopal where she was also the School Head Girl. And later studied at the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune. Her sister Rita is the wife of Rajeev Verma, an Indian actor who is usually known for playing fatherly roles such as Salman Khan's dad in Maine Pyar Kiya [edit] Career Jaya Bhaduri and Anil Dhawan in Basu Chatterjee's Piya Ka Ghar 1972, one of the films which exemplified her girl-next-door image. After initial success in her native West Bengal, she joined Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, here she was picked out to play the eponymous role of Guddi in the 1971 hit, Guddi in which she played a schoolgirl obsessed with film star Dharmendra after which she moved to Mumbai and starred in many Hindi hit films, such as Jawani Diwani (1972), which remains one of the few glamorous roles, she did, compared to the girl-next-door look she usually used in most of her films. Her last film as a lead actress was Silsila (1981), also opposite her husband (incidentally "Silsila" was a surprise flop of the year). After which she stopped acting in movies. During the late 1980s she wrote the story for the film Shahenshah which starred her husband in the lead. After a gap of film appearances for 18 years, She returned to acting with Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa (1998), a film that sensitively portrays the Naxalite movement, and has since played mother roles which she has been praised for. In 2000 she starred in the film Fiza opposite Karisma Kapoor and Hrithik Roshan. The film was considered one of her best performances and she received the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award for her work. Doing a few films every year she also starred in Karan Johar's family drama Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001) with her husband again. She then starred in Karan Johar's next film, Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003). She played the role of Preity Zinta's mother, Jennifer, for which she again received a best supporting actress award. Her latest film is Laaga Chunari Mein Daag where she appeared with son Abhishek Bachchan and actresses Rani Mukerji and Konkona Sen Sharma. [edit] Political careerOf late, Bachchan became active in politics, notably with the Samajwadi Party and has been a Member of Parliament, representing Rajya Sabha. Bachchan returned to the Upper House as MP of Samajwadi Party in July 2006. Her husband, Bollywood film star Amitabh Bachchan, accompanied her to the swearing-in ceremony.
