Before entering provincial politics, Tarchuk was chair of the Headwaters Health Authority board, a trustee with the Canadian Rockies School Division, an executive member of the Alberta School Boards Association, a director of Jubilee Insurance and a board member of the Alberta Educational Technology and Research Foundation. Tarchuk was elected to her fourth term representing Banff-Cochrane in the 2008 provincial election, after which she was appointed Minister of Children and Youth Services.[1] Premier Ed Stelmach gave Tarchuk the mandate to expand support for Aboriginals and immigrants, and improve access to existing programs for Albertans affected by family violence. Tarchuk is tasked with supporting the creation of 14,000 new child care spaces by 2011, and providing low and middle income families with a subsidy to cover the costs for out-of-school child care.[2]

Child and Youth Services is Tarchuk's second ministerial portfolio. She was previously appointed Minister of Children's Services in December 2006.

Tarchuk was first elected in the 1997 provincial election. In addition to her ministerial responsibilities, she has had extensive experience chairing key committees across a spectrum of government service, including the standing policy committees on Economic Development and Finance and Health and Safe Communities. She served as a member of the Agenda and Priorities Committee and has been active on committees addressing tourism marketing, justice and sustainable development.
