James Curtiss (also Curtis) (April 1803 – November 2, 1859). Twice served as Mayor of Chicago, Illinois (1847–1848 and 1850–1851) for the Democratic Party. Curtiss arrived in Chicago from New York, New York in 1835 and opened a law office. When an addition was added to Chicago in 1839, it was called Carpenter and Curtiss for Curtiss and developer Philo Carpenter.
