[edit] Early career

Spencer moved to league heartland Townsville at age 18 months, and became a standout U-18 basketballer.[2] He did not play football until 2003.[1] In 2007 he moved to Brisbane to play AFL because:

"I couldn't really get noticed in Townsville so I moved to Brisbane to get a better standard of football. If I do become the first (Townsville product) to play AFL I would be very proud of it."[1]

He completed his schooling at Brisbane Boys College and his performances with Redland Bombers in the AFL Queensland State League gained the attention of several AFL talent scouts.[1] Spencer's uncle is Tony Kelly, chairman of the Brisbane Lions football club, one of the teams that scouted Spencer but did not select him.[1]

[edit] Melbourne Demons

Spencer spent his first season on the Melbourne rookie list in the VFL with Sandringham where he played seven games at reserves level and 10 in the seniors.[3] The strong-bodied ruckman is a long-term prospect and will be given more time to develop his game in 2009, particular as Melbourne is looking for a ruck option to replace retired Jeff White[1][3]

Spencer made his NAB Cup debut on the 21st February 2009 to encouraging reviews.[4] He played his first AFL game in Round 1 2009, and managed 6 games for the season.
