Jabotabek (or Jabodetabek) is an officially recognized definition and term given to the metropolitan area surrounding Jakarta, Indonesia in 2000, officially including four municipalities and three regencies.^[1] The population of Jabotabek in the Indonesia 2000 census was officially counted to be 23.3 million, making it the largest metropolitan area in Indonesia and sixth on the largest metropolitan areas in the world.^[1]

The area straddles DKI Jakarta and the provinces West Java and Banten, and the three surrounding Regencies of those provinces: Bekasi and Bogor in West Java, and Tangerang in Banten. Also included are the Kotamadya independent municipalities of Bogor, Depok, Bekasi and Tangerang. The newly incorporated Kotamadya South Tangerang split off from Tangerang Regency in October 2008.

The name of the region is taken from the first two or three letters of each city's name: Jabo(de)tabek from Jakarta, Bogor, (Depok), Tangerang and Bekasi.

Other definitions of the Jakarta metropolitan area exist, including the Jabodetabek-Cirangkarta definition, which includes the municipalities of Serang (incorporated November 2007) and Cilegon, 3 more regencies (Serang Regency of Banten, and Karawang Regency and Purwakarta Regency of West Java.^{[citation needed]} Furthermore, the Bandung Metropolitan Area lies less than 20 km from the edge of Bogor Regency and contiguous with Purwakarta Regency, forming a continuous urban corridor.

Among the inhabitants, approximately 8.7 million live in Jakarta; 6.6 million in the five cities of Bogor, Depok, Bekasi, Tangerang, and South Tangerang; and 8.1 million in the three regencies (Bekasi Regency, Tangerang Regency, and Bogor Regency). The population is steadily increasing due to migration from all over Indonesia.

The metropolitan area is partly defined by the areas from which people commute into the city. Jabotabek is served by commuter train known as Jabotabek electric train (KRL Jabotabek) with four line rail road.

• Bogor - Jakarta Kota rail road, the busiest commuter railroad in Jabotabek. It has five major terminals at Bogor station in Bogor City, Depok station in Depok City, a major transfer point at Manggarai Station in South Jakarta, Juanda Station in Central Jakarta, and finally at Jakarta Kota Station.

• Bekasi - Jakarta Kota rail road, the second busiest commuter railroad in Jabotabek. It has five major terminals at Bekasi station in Bekasi City, Jatinegara Station (East Jakarta), Pasar Senen Station (Central Jakarta), Kemayoran Station (Central Jakarta) and finally at Jakarta Kota Station.

• Serpong - Manggarai rail road. It has four major terminals at Serpong station in South Tangerang City, Tanah Abang Station (Central Jakarta), Sudirman Station (Central Jakarta), and finally at Manggarai Station in South Jakarta.

• Tangerang - Jakarta Kota rail road. It has two major terminals at Tangerang station in Tangerang City and Jakarta Kota.
