JALways Co.,Ltd. (株式会社JALウェイズ, Kabushiki-gaisha JAL Weizu?) is an airline subsidiary of Japan Airlines. Headquartered in the Japan Airlines building in Shinagawa, Tokyo, Japan,[1][2] JALways operates more than 200 flights each week, with daily scheduled flights from three airports in Japan to Bangkok, Manila, Denpasar, Guam, Honolulu and Kona as well as international scheduled services for Japan Airlines on a wet lease basis. Its main base is Narita International Airport, Tokyo.[3]
Its pilots are based in Tokyo, Japan, while its cabin attendants are trained and based in Tokyo and Osaka, Japan; Bangkok, Thailand; and Manila, Philippines and are predominantly Thai and Filipino. JALways operates independently of JAL, but shares livery and interline benefits: this is primarily to avoid the higher labor costs of JAL's Japanese crews and maintenance. Because JALways operates to resort locations, JALways planes have the word "Reso`cha" (Super Resort Express) on the plane. Also, the flight attendant uniforms have a tropical theme. It is also common for JALways aircraft to be used on JAL routes, and vice-versa.[citation needed]

The airline was established on 5 October 1990 and started operations in July 1991. It originally started as a charter airline named Japan Air Charter, and built a relationship as a leasing partner for Japan Airlines. It was given the current name on 1 October 1999 and became an international scheduled airline. It became a wholly owned subsidiary of Japan Airlines in March 2001. It has 2,633 employees (at March 2007).[3] Operations began with McDonnell Douglas DC-10 and Boeing 747 aircraft, but the DC-10s were retired in October 2005. In late 2006, JALways flightcrews were leased to JALCargo to operate freighter flights out of Anchorage, Alaska to destinations in the USA.[citation needed]
JAL Group has downsized the Boeing 747-200 and -300 fleet, with complete retirement of those aircraft completed in March 2009. In late 2007, JAL Group began transitioning the company's Boeing 747-400s to JALways, with completion expected by 2010.[4]
JALways contracted foreign pilots, mostly American, since its inception until March 2009. The pilot group is now strictly Japanese nationals leased from Japan Airlines, International.
