I-55 also provides easy access to downtown Chicago via the Dan Ryan Expressway interchange, just south of the northern terminus at Lake Shore Drive.
The roots of Interstate 55 could be traced back to the need of a national highway system[6]. President Dwight D. Eisenhower saw the need of a national network of highways that would help with the mobilization of the army. He had been impressed with the autobahn he saw in Germany during World War II. In 1956 he signed the Federal Aid Highway Act into existence[7]. Although the act provided for a highway replacing Route 66, it was spared destruction because of it being more modern than other routes[8]. However during the 1960s and 1970's, Route 66 was replaced by Interstate 55. It was built in sections across Illinois, and largely replaced former Route 66 in Illinois, and some stretches directly overlap the old highway[9]. It was one of the first highways in Illinois to be completed[10]. One can find many signs posted noting the historic route. The earliest stretches were built near Chicago along the Southwest Expressway are were later renamed the Adlai E. Stevenson Expressway[11][12]. Later portions of the highway were built downstate.
In Plainfield, I-55 was intended to be the southern terminus of the formerly proposed Fox Valley Freeway.
