The National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA, pronounced [inʁa]) is a mission-oriented public research institution Founded in 1946 under the joint authority of the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research and the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. Ranked the number one agricultural institute in Europe and number two in the world, INRA carries out mission-oriented research for high-quality and healthy foods, competitive and sustainable agriculture and a preserved and valorised environment.

INRA has 20 centres throughout France, including overseas France.

INRA has scientific partnerships with the major scientific research institutes in the world, universities, agricultural and veterinary schools and is committed to constructing the European Research area. INRA is developing a large number of exchanges and collaboration agreements with the international scientific community in numerous countries of Europe, America, Asia and Africa.

The INRA Awards distinguish the exceptional creativity and skills encountered amongst researchers. They acknowledge the efforts and careers of men and women working in agricultural research: experienced researchers or younger talents for the future, as well as engineers or technicians providing support for research.

In 2007, the Agricultural Research Award for Scientific Excellence was attributed to Jean Dénarié, senior scientist emeritus in the Laboratory for Plant-Microbe Interactions at the INRA Research Centre of Toulouse.

In 2006, this award went to Georges Pelletier, Research Director in Plant Breeding and Genetics.

On 1 July 2006, INRA, Cemagref, Cirad and Ifremer grouped their publishing activities in a single publishing house: Editions Quae. With nearly 1000 titles in its catalogue, Editions Quae aims to become a reference for scientific and technical publishing, responding to the needs of a demanding readership who require access to reliable, high-quality information.
