IIT Mandi is one of the eight new IITs proposed by the MHRD, Government of India. The government has already identified a piece of land in Mandi district for setting up of the IIT. The central government has decided that, IIT Mandi in Himachal Pradesh will start functioning from 2009 academic session. IIT Roorkee will be mentoring this IIT. For the 2009-'10 academic year, IIT Mandi will function from the IIT Roorkee campus.

[edit] Courses Offered at IIT Mandi, Himachal Pradesh

As long as the new IIT is mentored by IIT Roorkee, it will offer only three B.Tech. Programmes in the following fields:

• Electrical Engineering
• Mechanical Engineering
• Computer Science & Engineering

Each branch will accepted only 40 students for the first batch that started in July 2009.
