Inari (Inari Sami: Aanaar, Northern Sami: Anár, Skolt Sami: Aanar and Swedish: Enare) is a municipality in Finland. The municipality was established in 1876. The largest villages of the municipality are Ivalo and Inari.

It is located in Finnish Lapland. The municipality has a total population of 6,881 (30 June 2009)^[2] and covers an area of 17,333.89 square kilometres (6,692.65 sq mi) of which 2,281.51 km² (880.90 sq mi) is water. It is the largest municipality in Finland.^[1] The population density is 0.46 inhabitants per square kilometre (1.2 /sq mi).

The municipality has four official languages: Finnish, Inari Sami (400 speakers), Skolt Sami (400 speakers) and Northern Sami (700 speakers).

Finland's largest National Park Lemmenjoki is partly located in Inari, as is the Urho Kekkonen National Park.

Lake Inari, a lake in the Inari municipality, is the third largest lake in Finland, with an area of 1,043 km² (403 sq mi), 40 km² (15 sq mi) smaller than the second largest lake, Lake Päijänne.

The wilderness areas of Hammastunturi, Muotkatunturi, Paistunturi, Kaldoaivi, Vätsäri and Tsarmitunturi are also located in Inari.

Ivalo Airport is located in Ivalo village, Inari.

The trilogy His Dark Materials, which takes place in an alternative world somewhat similar to our own, features a prominent character called Serafina Pekkala; who is a witch from a tribe near Lake Inari.
