Iganga is a town in eastern Uganda. It is the 'chief town' of Iganga District and the district headquarters are located there.
[edit] LocationIganga is located approximately 43 kilometres (27 mi), by road, northeast of the city of Jinja, on the highway between Jinja and Tororo. [1] The coordinates of Iganga town are: Latitude:0.6160; Longitude:33.4822, and is located in the country's Busoga region. [edit] OverviewIganga town has several Internet cafes, several guest houses, and a bustling market in the center of town beside the taxi park. Town landmarks include the Iganga Hospital, A 100-bed public hospital, administered by the Uganda Ministry of Health. Another landmark is the DevelopNet Iganga Project, which houses an Internet cafe and a community center for the Iganga District NGO/CBO Forum. Mwaana Hotel is one of the hospitality establishments in town. Busoga University, located 1 mile (1.6 km) west of downtown Iganga town on the highway between Iganga and Jinja, commenced operations on February 12, 1999. [edit] TransportIganga is served by a station on the Uganda Railways. The highway from the border with Kenya at Malaba, passes through Tororo and through Iganga, on the way to Jinja and on to Kampala, Uganda's capital and largest city. [edit] PopulationIn 2002, the national census estimated Iganga's population at 39,472.
