Main article: ISO 3166-2 ISO 3166-2:AU is the entry in ISO 3166-2, part of the ISO 3166 standard published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), which defines codes for the names of the principal subdivisions of Australia (whose ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 code is AU). Currently 6 states and 2 territories are assigned codes.[note 1] Each code starts with AU-, followed by two or three letters, which is the conventional abbreviation of the state or territory (defined in Australian Standard AS 4212-1994).

As for the other external territories, the ISO 3166/MA considers the Ashmore and Cartier Islands and the Coral Sea Islands covered by Australia, and the Australian Antarctic Territory covered by Antarctica (alpha-2 code AQ). [edit] See also
