Hydrocynus, is a genus in the family Alestiidae, a family from the order Characiformes, endemic to the African continent. The name is derived from the Greek hydro ("water") + kyon ("dog").[2] The genus contains at least 5 species, all popularly known as "African Tigerfish" for their fierce territoriality and other characteristics that make them excellent game fish.[3] [edit] Notes and references
