Much of the community revolves around the high schools sports programs although in the last ten years the dramatic arts program has become more prominent. Hughson High's Academic Decathlon team has also, in recent years, been garnering more attention from its students, placing eleventh within their division.

Hughson Union High School belongs to the Trans Valley League in the Sac-Joaquin Section of the California Interscholastic Federation. The school's teams, known as the Hughson Huskies, compete in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track, volleyball, and wrestling.

The football team has the claim of winning several state championships in its division. Citation needed|date=August 2009}} The wrestling team has also placed well at the state competitions, especially for a school of its size.^{[citation needed]} Hughson's Baseball team has also done well in recent years making the playoffs and hopes to make it again this year in 2010.
