Hendon railway station is a National Rail station situated to the west of Hendon, in the London Borough of Barnet in North London, at grid reference TQ221882. The station lies on the north-south Midland Main Line and is served by First Capital Connect trains as part of the Thameslink Line service. It is on the boundary of Travelcard Zone 3 and Travelcard Zone 4. It was built by the Midland Railway in 1868 on its extension to St. Pancras. From 1875 the Midland opened a service to Victoria on the London, Chatham and Dover Railway and received coaches from the London and South Western Railway for attachment to north-bound trains.[2]
[edit] ServicesThe typical off-peak service from the station is four trains per hour southbound to London, Wimbledon and Sutton, and four trains per hour northbound, of which two terminate at St Albans and two run to Luton. East Midlands Trains InterCity services from Leeds, Sheffield and Leicester run through at high speed, but do not stop. Interchange with InterCity services can be made at Luton and St Pancras International. [edit] Development Northbound view across the four platforms. The two additional freight lines are behind the platform fencing on the extreme left. Off the right-hand side of the photograph, beyond the car park, runs the parallel M1 motorway. From March 2009, Southeastern and First Capital Connect began running some peak hour trains from Sevenoaks to Luton[3], though in the off-peak these services turn back at Kentish Town. Other trains from south of the River Thames within the larger Thameslink network may call at the station from 2015, when it is likely that the existing Sutton Loop trains will terminate at Blackfriars[4]. A new Brent Cross Thameslink station is proposed further south, and the four platforms at Hendon station are not being extended from 8 to 12 carriages. The only other Thameslink stations north of the River Thames remaining with 8-car platform lengths are Cricklewood and Kentish Town. [edit] Service patterns
