Helminthology is the study of worms and especially parasitic worms. This field deals with the study of their taxonomy and the effect on their hosts. The origin of the first compound of the word is from the Greek ἕλμινς - helmins (root: helminth-), meaning "worm". One branch of Helminthology is the study of the nematode C. elegans, a popular model organism in biology. Though not a parasitic worm, C. elegans is easily cultivated in the laboratory, and thus provides a useful platform for worm science.
