It is the flagship product of the company and is made of purified water, malted barley, hops, and yeast. In 1886 H. Elion finished the development of the Heineken A-yeast. This is the yeast that is still used for the beer.[1] The beer is force carbonated.[citation needed] It is the world's most popular lager, and is particularly successful in Europe.[citation needed]

Four awards in the early history of Heineken are mentioned on the label of the beer bottle:

In sport, Heineken sponsors the Heineken Cup (named the H Cup in France due to restrictions on alcohol promotion), which is the premier tournament for European club rugby sides. It is also the official beer of the UEFA Champions League and Chelsea F.C.

Heineken also sponsors Jeff Hanneman, guitarist and founding member of the American thrash metal band Slayer.
