Farmington Harrison is most well known athletically for its football team which has won a state record 12 State Championships in 1981, 1982, 1988, 1989, 1991, 1993, 1994, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001 under legendary Head Coach John Herrington who has been coaching at Harrison since 1970 when the school opened. Herrington is also in the Michigan Coaching Hall of Fame for both Football and Baseball which he coached at Harrison and North Farmington High School. [edit] ArchitectureThe school was completed in 1973 with the memories of student riots very fresh in the public's mind. It was built to be able to withstand a major student riot. The only windows that were large were on the third floor and were designed with a slant so that rocks thrown from the ground would have a lesser chance of breaking the windows. The doors at the bottom of the school were all designed to be sealed from the inside. The 3rd floor - which housed the administration offices - is only accessible by stairwells that could be sealed off and a door to the outside that is only reachable by a 'bridge'. The school has had some changes because of the needs of growing student body and the lack of need for security measures mentioned above; especially since the risk of student riot is near zero. The most obvious change reflecting this lessened need for security are the larger windows on the second floor which were part of a major renovation in the year 2000. The sign 'harrison high school', with a green background and yellow lettering that previously was sited at the main entrance to the school was written in the style of e.e. cummings; all lowercase.
