Hardcover books

A hardcover (or hardback or hardbound) is a book bound with rigid protective covers (typically of cardboard covered with cloth, heavy paper, or sometimes leather). They may have flexible sewn spines which allow the book to lie flat on a surface when opened, although most modern commercial hardcover books have glued spines.

Hardcover books are often printed on acid-free paper, and are much more durable than paperbacks, which have flexible, easily damaged paper covers and glued spines. Hardcover books are also marginally more expensive to manufacture and usually much more to purchase. Hardcovers frequently come with artistic dust jackets.

[edit] Marketing

If brisk sales are anticipated, a hardcover edition of a book is typically released first, followed by a "trade" paperback edition (same format as hardcover) the next year. For very popular books these sales cycles may be extended, and followed by a mass market paperback edition typeset in a more compact size and printed on thinner, less durable paper. This is intended to, in part, prolong the life of the immediate buying boom that occurs for some best sellers. After the attention to the book has subsided, a lower cost version, the paperback, is released to entice further sales.

[edit] Costs

Hardcover books tend to cost more than paperback versions of the book. This is due to price discrimination by booksellers who observe that consumers are willing to pay a premium for hardcover editions over paperbacks beyond the extra costs in materials and production. Hardcover editions are usually reserved for authors who are (or are expected to be) successful.

[edit] Differences in structure

Old book bindings at the Merton College library.

Hardcovers generally consist of pages, two boards, and a cloth covering them. Their pages are glued into a flexible piece between the boards, and it too is covered by the cloth. A paper covering, usually artistic in nature, is put over the cloth, folding over each horizonal end of the boards. On the folded part over the front cover is generally a blurb, or a summary of the book. On the back folded part is where the biography of the author and/or illustrator can be found. Reviews are often placed on the back of the jacket.

ExcerptA Tale of Two ChildrenThe blaring telephone woke me from the already fitful sleep of a night on call. I struggled desperately to lift my mind from semiconsciousness. The year was 1981; the time was 1:30 a.m. At that hour, a ringing phone meant a critically ill child.I'm a pediatric endocrinologist. Since 1978 I have cared for youngsters with diabetes. I've also worked with adults with this dread disease, as a researcher, teacher, and advocate. In 2002, I was elected president of the American Diabetes Association. Many people today think of diabetes as a slow-moving chronic disease. But it can be swift and merciless, particularly when it attacks young children. An abnormally high blood sugar level, the hallmark of diabetes, is always a medical emergency. In my early years as a doctor, first as an intern and then as a resident, I spent every third night on call, ready to go into battle against diabetes. The telephone call on that night in 1981 came from the emergency department resident. He told me that a nine-month-old baby named Cameron had been rushed to Children's Hospital Los Angeles in a coma. Cameron's blood sugar was ten times higher than normal. No one in the emergency department had ever seen such a high number. By the time the resident finished his terse description, I was on my feet, fully awake.I had recently completed my fellowship in pediatric endocrinology, the specialized training that follows residency, and I'd joined the staff at Children's Hospital, where I now head the Center for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism. My husband, Neal, who was also establishing a medical career, was out of town at a professional meeting. We had two young children: Adam, age three, and Jonah, who was almost one. Our babysitter had quit that afternoon, and I'd spent most of the evening patching together child care arrangements for the coming week. I'd fallen into bed at midnight, even more exhausted than usual.A close friend had promised to babysit if I need

The findings of the Framingham Heart Studyûbegun in 1948ûhave been nothing short of revolutionary. Over the years, they have provided conclusive evidence that cardiovascular disease is largely the result of measurable and modifiable risk factors, and that individuals can gain control over their heart health by looking carefully at their diet and lifestyle and changing their intake of saturated fat, cholesterol, and tobacco smoke; losing weight or becoming physically active; and regulating their levels of stress and blood pressure. It is principally because of the Heart Study that this understanding of what was once deemed a "silent killer" today seems intuitive. The Framingham Heart Study was launched not long after Franklin Delano Roosevelt succumbed to a massive stroke, the result of runaway blood pressure, at a time when cardiologists in the United States numbered fewer than 400 and heart disease was the nation's number- one cause of death. The study asked 5,209 citizens of Framingham, Massachusettsûwho overate, smoked, and suffered heart attacks and strokes to the same extent as the rest of the United Statesûto undergo biennial physicals, blood tests, and detailed interviews concerning their behavior. The results changed the course of medical history.Written by the Study's current director and a national health reporter, A Change of Heart is the first account of this heroic cooperation between the U.S. Public Health Service and the people of Framingham. It is a fascinating, clear-eyed assessment of the achievements and challenges of the Framingham Heart Study to date, and of its continuing importance.A Change of Heart by Daniel Levy, M.D. & Susan Brink - 272 Pages, Hardcover Book
