A hand pass is an ice hockey term for when a player bats the puck (with his hand) to a teammate. A legal hand pass is made when a defending player passes the puck to a teammate who is within his own half of the rink and is received within the same half. An illegal hand pass is called when if the defending player bats the puck within his own half or the attacking half of the Ice and is accepted by his teammate in the attacking half of ice surface (center red line and beyond), this results in a stoppage of play and a faceoff will occur at the position where the puck was passed from. A referee or a linesman is allowed to call this stoppage of play. Exception: Should the puck be intercepted by an opposing player, before the pass is completed, the infraction will be waved off and play shall continue.
