Han Moo-hyup (born on Aug 22, 1923 in Pyeongyang, North Korea) is a South Korean businessman, soldier, and an educator. He was the Chairman of Hanhyup Co. from 1986, and also was the President and Chief Executive Officer of Hyundai Marine & Fire Insurance. He is currently the honorary chairman of Korea Esperanto Association (Korea Esperanto-Asocio).[1] Han previously was commissioned Major General of the land forces of the Republic of Korea (South Korea). He is also a founder of the Korean Catholic Entrepreneurs Association (한국가톨릭경제인회).[2] Park Chung-hee, former president of South Korea, officiated Han's wedding as an old friend.[3]
[edit] PersonalHan, as a young boy, fled North Korea alone and joined the army in South Korea. After Han graduated Korea Military Academy in 1948, he pursued graduate study at Dankook University (1962), Hanyang University (1965), Korea National Defense University, and National Defense University in the United States. [edit] Career[edit] Military CareerAs a soldier, he served as the divisional commander of the Republic of Korea Army 26th division, director of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (Republic of Korea) Intelligence Bureau, and the commander of Korea Army Training Center (often referred to as Nonsan Training Center). Also, he previously served as the second deputy director of the National Intelligence Service (NIS), formerly known as KCIA or the Korean Central Intelligence Agency. [edit] Business CareerAfter his retirement from the ROK Army as Major General, Han headed insurance companies for 15 years. He was the president of Hyundai Marine & Fire Insurance, vice chairman of Haedong Fire & Marine Insurance, and chairman of Hanhyup Co. from 1986. As a devout Roman Catholic, Han founded the Korean Catholic Entrepreneurs Association in 1979. [edit] Educational CareerHan was named Board of Trustees Chair of Kumoh Academy, which owns Kumoh National Institute of Technology and Kumoh Technology High School. He later became the chairman of Korea Esperanto Association (KEA) and a trustee of the University of Suwon (Gowoon Academy). He chaired KEA twice from 1978 to 1981, and from 1991 to 1994. [edit] La EsperoIn 1976, Han founded "La Espero el Koreio," a public relations magazine which introduced Korean culture and literature to the world in Esperanto. In total, 123 editions were published before the discontinuance of the magazine in 1994. Han and his publication "La Espero" played a crucial role in the development of Esperanto in Korea.
