Han is the common English spelling of 한, a common Korean family name. According to the 2000 census, 한 (韓) is the twelfth most common surname in the Republic of Korea. In Sino-Korean, it literally means "country" or "leader." Han is considered the oldest surname in Korea, dating back 5000 years according to genealogy records.
[edit] ClansAs with all Korean family names, the holders of the Han surname are divided into different patrilineal clans, or lineages, known in Korean as bon-gwan, based on their ancestral seat. Most such clans trace their lineage back to a specific founder. This system was at its height under the yangban aristocracy of the Joseon Dynasty, but it remains in use today. There are approximately 241 such clans claimed by South Koreans. [edit] Cheongju clanCheongju Han (韓) clan , based on genealogical records, is considered the oldest clan in Korea. According to Cheongju Han clan genealogical record (청주한씨세보), the founder is Hanlan (한란), who is the descendant of Gijun of Gojoseon. The Cheongju clan became successful during late Goryeo era, with a lot of scholar officials coming from this clan. All Korean holders of the Han surname traces their ancestral lineage back to the Cheonju Han clan. However the clan has about thirty sects, with six prominent sects comprising much of the clan's population. There are exceptions of people which holds the surname Han(漢) which may have came from overseas (mainly China) In South Korea the estimated distribution (2000) that there are 715,556 which are holders of the surname Han. Cheongju Han (韓) lineages (From Cheongju Han, Hanlan(한란)
(Other lineages (Other sons of Hanlan's father, therefore brothers of Hanlan)) These lineages are still considered to be part of Cheongju Han since they all have the same ancestry
[edit] Related Surnames with the Cheongju HanThere are two Korean surnames which are believed to be related and share common ancestry and origin with the Cheongju Han clan. Taewon Seonwoo clan and the Hangju Ki/Gi clan are believed to have originated from the same root as the Cheongju Han clan. According to the genealogical records the last King of Gojoseon, Gijun of Gojoseon believed to have had three sons, Woo-Pyong (우평), Woo-Sung (우성) and Woo-Ryang (우량). During the Three Kingdoms of Korea, Woo-Pyong is said to have settled in Goguryeo and its descendants later established the Taewon Seonwoo Clan, Woo-Sung is said to have settled in Baekje and its descendants later established the Hangju Ki/Gi Clan and finally Woo-Ryang is said to have settled in Silla and its descendants later established the Cheongju Han Clan establishing its "Bon-gwan" in Cheongju. [edit] Han and GojoseonSee also: List of monarchs of Korea, Gija Joseon, Gojoseon, Samhan, Proto-Three Kingdoms of Korea, Gija Many Korean historians believe that Gijun of Gojoseon was actually "Hanjun"(한준) of Gojoseon and had the surname Han(韓) not Gi/Ki and that all of the Kings of Gija Joseon were of the surname Han(韓). Gija Joseon which was believed to be of surname Gi is in reality Han(韓) There is a controversy on where Gija is from, which is believed to be from the Chinese Shang Dynasty, Gija as a paternal uncle (or brother) of the last emperor of the Chinese Shang Dynasty, King Zhou, however it is likely that Gija is a Dongyi, native people in the East of China. Gija's descendants and himself were also believed to have the surname Han(韓) as King Jun of Gojoseon the last King of Gojoseon and descendant of Gija claimed himself as the King of Han (한왕(韓王)) with the foundation of Mahan part of the Samhan after fleeing from Wiman. With this it shows that the surname Han may have existed since the time of Gija Joseon or Gojoseon and establishes the Han(韓) clan the oldest surname in Korea dating back to around 5000 years which have founded and ruled Gojoseon and Mahan With this Surname Han(韓) is considered one of the Great surnames of Korea which have once been royalties consisting of Go (Goguryeo), Buyeo (Baekje), Kim, Bak/Park, Seok (Silla), Dae (Balhae), Wang (Goryeo), Yi/Lee (Joseon) However there are also many Korean historians which deny any existence of Gija and Gija Joseon, accepting it as a legend [edit] ListFamous Koreans with this family name: Politicians
