Hall, Russell & Company, Limited was a shipbuilder based in Aberdeen, Scotland. [edit] HistoryThe company was founded by James and William Hall, brothers, Thomas Russell, a Glasgow engineer, and James Cardno Couper in 1864 and was set up initially to build steam engines and boilers. In 1867 they built their first ship the 'Kwang Tung', she was built for the Chinese Navy. Hall Russell like most other shipyards first built ships using iron, this later changed to steel.[1] In 1977, the company became part of the nationalised British Shipbuilders Corporation, before being returned to the private sector in 1986.[1] It came under the ownership of A & P Appledore International, in 1989 as A & P Appledore International (Aberdeen).[1] However, it had been classed by the Government as a naval shipbuilder, despite traditionally producing fishing vessels and small cargo ships, and closed in 1992.[1] Hall Russell is well known as the builder of a number of Royal Navy minesweepers Flower Class corvettes and River Class frigates during World War II and latterly, for building a mix of fishing, cargo vessels and naval patrol craft.[1] The last vessel completed at the yard was the RMS St Helena delivered in 1991. The most famous ship ever built by Hall Russell was the 'Sir Willaim Hardy' she was launched in 1955. This was the first diesel-electric all-refrigerated trawler built in the UK. She was refurbished by Greenpeace and re-launched 29th April 1978, renamed the ‘Rainbow Warrior’. She was bombed by French agents in New Zealand 10th July 1985. Her masts currently stand outside the Dargaville Museum, located in the upper North Island of New Zealand. [edit] Ships built by Hall RussellShips built by Hall Russell include:
