Gregory Doran (born 1958[1]) is an English theatre director, currently the Chief Associate Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC).[2] His notable productions include a production of Macbeth starring Antony Sher, which was filmed for Channel 4 in 2001,[3][4] as well as Hamlet in 2008, starring David Tennant and Patrick Stewart.[5][6]

Doran was born in Preston[1] and educated at Preston Catholic College.[7] He attended Bristol University and trained as an actor at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.

Gregory Doran started out as an actor and played Chris Temple in the first series of the television sitcom, All At No. 20, in 1985. He joined the RSC in 1987, initially as an actor. He directed his first RSC production in 1992, having been an assistant director for several years previously.[8] He became an Associate Director in 1996. In 2002, he supervised a season of seldom-performed Jacobean plays (including the debatedly Shakespearean Edward III and works by Philip Massinger, John Fletcher, Ben Jonson, John Marston and George Chapman),[8] which earned Doran a Laurence Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement of the Year.[9]

He and frequent collaborator Antony Sher entered into a civil partnership in 2005.[10]
