Greater Manila generally refers to the contiguous urbanization surrounding Metro Manila. Greater Manila spills into the neighboring provinces of Laguna, Cavite, Rizal, Bulacan, Pampanga and Batangas. Greater Manila hugs Laguna de Bay, the largest lake in Luzon. Not all the cities and towns of these provinces are urbanized, and some urban zones are independent cities that are not contiguously built up with Manila. There is no official sub-provincial based definition for Greater Manila (see Mega Manila), nevertheless, localities can be categorized by population density. Mega Manila is a more commonly used term than Greater Manila, but has multiple definitions. To get an idea of the density, Manila's locality-based contiguous 1,000+ people per square km zone occupies 4,863 sq km with 21.4 million people, while Greater New York City's CMSA in 2007 occupies 30,671 sqkm with 21.9 million,[1] 6.3 times more area.
