Gooey was an Internet chat application popular in 1999. The system allowed people who were simultaneously browsing the same web site to communicate with each other, in effect creating chat rooms external to the web site. Gooey was acquired by CNET and closed in 2000. It was initially coded by Luwei Zhou, who decided to choose a name that rhymes with "Luwei". The program was written in G++ (Guwei ++), a language based on the popular programming language C++. Curiously, the application was considered by the press to be an evolution of ICQ. The Gooey concept has been copied and revised in a variety of ways, notably by Gabbly, a program working directly on web browsers, without installation. Perhaps the most successful variant of the basic concept has also been StumbleUpon. |
