Good Morning is a New Zealand daytime television news magazine and talk show that airs weekday mornings on TV ONE. The show began in 1995 and is currently hosted by Brendon Pongia and Sarah Bradley, and each episode includes several segments related to cooking, interior design, gardening, and other topics related to the domestic life. Celebrities often appear on the programme, including many soap opera stars.
[edit] HistoryThe show began in 1995, originally broadcast from Wellington with its inaugural host Liz Gunn when it moved to Auckland, New Zealand, in 1996 and became closely linked to its long-serving host Mary Lambie, who hosted the series from 1997 to 2003. The content of the series through 1996 and 2003 at times was experimental. The series paid for itself with its advertorials leaving Television executives who didn't watch the show in a position where they didn't mind what or who featured on the series. Dating segments, Lambie PI (private investigator) and Lambie's on set cat Louis were some of the unusual moves the series made to keep it fresh and innovative. TV Talkback was fairly new to new zealand audiences and faxes and live calls were encouraged by Lambie. It satisfied the all important 'interactivity' between audience and show for network executives, but also provided cost free content to fill the 2 hour gap. This was killed off at the end of the 2004 series when executives decided a full screen picture of a nodding and often matronly finger pointing host wasn't winning any ratings points. Advertorials were 70% live in the days of Mary Lambie, where clients would frequently take advantage of being live with attention grabbing stunts. The most memorable was Peter "Mad Butcher" Leach ejecting his false teeth into a horrified Alison Leonard's hands and leaping over to a shocked Lambie still with teeth in hand. With the majority of advertorial clients based in Auckland, live advertorial content was cost effective and injected a different kind of energy to the series. This was to change when the series moved to Avalon when floor managers and an inexperienced producer found the extra live component too stressful and entirely pre recorded ads were to be made permanent. Ratings were at an all time high from 2000 - 2002, thanks to the talents of Producer/Executive Producer Simone McNaught who was responsible for the edgier and more relevant content, along with her talented team of researchers - a team with a reputation for being able to book almost anyone to appear on the show with many exclusives - beating even the Holmes show to guests like the Dalai Lama.[citation needed] This ruffled many feathers in TVNZ's hierarchy, due to the increased competition for talking heads on shows such as Breakfast, 5.30 Live and Holmes.[weasel words] Sadly Good Morning who could afford longer and more in depth interviews was ordered to pull its head in and leave popular international talent for prime time shows.[weasel words][citation needed] Production finally moved to TVNZ's Avalon Studios, north of Wellington, in 2004 when it made sense for an underperforming Avalon studios to have a regular series and the overcrowded Auckland studios couldn't cope with the regular booking of Good Morning. The series was to dramatically change and the ratings success found during McNaught's reign have never been seen again, due to a more parochial format.[neutrality is disputed] Lisa Manning, Evie Ashton, Jeanette Thomas and Jacqui Hudson took their turns in the host's chair until finally an injection of finance gave the series producers more money to fly in talent from across the country. The two-host format with Pongia and Bradley began in 2006 with a new producer, Sally-Anne Kerr. The show is typically broadcast live, with the usual exception of advertorials that are embedded in the programme. A news bulletin is inserted into the programme at 10am beginning in the third quarter of 2006, usually anchored by Peter Williams. In 2007, with an expanded 3 hour format for the show, another news bulletin was inserted at 11am. In July 2007, Steven Gray, the show's long-time film and DVD reviewer (11 years) also started co-hosting the show, he has resumed his position as DVD/Entertainment reviewer on Good Morning. A Newly appointed Co-host Hadyn Jones, has joined the Good Morning Team, replacing Steven Gray. He comes from the TVNZ Team of One News [edit] Former Hosts
