The gold jersey is the pledge by the home at that time leader of the Tour of Spain. This enables it to be identified in the stages at which it carries as the winner. [edit] HistoryTo facilitate the recognition of the leading race in the early editions of the Tour of Spain in the first general classification was wearing a jersey orange color that no other rider could carry in their locker room to avoid confusion . Although there is an official classification of the mountain, during the first editions of the leader jersey that classification is not carrying identification. In 1935 and 1936, the leader of the general classification wore a light-orange jersey. In 1941, it became white, while in 1942 it was orange again. In 1945 it became dark-red, and from 1946 to 1950 it was white with a red stripe. Later, in 1955 the jersey became yellow, like the one used in the Tour de France. [1] It remained yellow for a long time, only in 1977 it was red. Since 1999, the jersey of the leader became a gold-colored, unlike the yellow leader's Tour de France. In 2010, the leader of the general classification will wear a red jersey.[2] [edit] See also[edit] References
