R&B or "Rhythm and Blues" is a term that was coined in the post World War II era to describe a new kind of music that was a fusion of jazz and blues. Many claim credit but most believe it began in Chicago, which was the primary location for black emigration. Next to Harlem in New York City, Chicago's South Side (or black ghetto) had the second largest black population and it was here that Southern musical influences met those of the North to create a new sound. It was faster than the Southern style and included electric guitars and horns. It was turbulent, aggressive and exciting. In 1946 that Muddy Waters cut the first Chicago electric blues records and in 1947, Billboard writer Jerry Wexler coined the term "rhythm and blues" to describe it. In 1949, the Billboard "race records" chart was renamed "rhythm and blues". | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
